COMM 100: Monroe's Motivated Sequence

Grabbing the Audience's Attention

State what the presentation is about and let the audience know what to expect. Remember, establishing credibility is a key factor in generating interest in what you are going to say. Providing some indication of your knowledge of the topic increases the likelihood the audience will be more willing to listen.

When introducing the topic, integrate into the introduction a technique for capturing the audience's attention such as a joke, quote, a piece of trivia, an anecdote, inspiring story, or perhaps staking-up two or more or these strategies to frame the presentation.
