Maverick Textbook Reserve Program

The Maverick Textbook Reserve Program is a unique program and opportunity for students choosing to check out expensive textbooks for a couple of hours at a time in lieu of shelling out large sums of money for the rental, or purchase of a used or are textbook.

Student Government, through the Library and Bookstore Advisory Committee, is the "lead partner" of the cooperative arrangement which involves the on-campus bookstore vendor, Maverick Shop Bookstore, and Library Services. Without the direct support of these two partners the program wouldn't be what it is.

The Maverick Textbook Reserve Program started in 2008 with just 57 copies of 16 individual titles.  The program was funded by a $5000 grant from the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities (MnSCU, now MinnState).  Our university was the only 4 year university to receive this grant.  That same year, the Student Senate voted to send $2000 to support the program, and the campus Bookstore gave $3500 to the program.  (Source: "Library textbook program aims to help students" by Rob Murray, Mankato Free Press, 09/15/2008; "Re-evaluating general education" by Dannie Higginbotham, The Reporter, page 5, October 30, 2008)

How does the Maverick Textbook Program Work?

Each semester, courses are selected for inclusion in the program, and copies of the selected books are sent to the library to be placed on Course Reserve.

The program focuses on high cost, high enrollment courses.  Not all courses that fit this definition are included.  Reasons why a course is not part of the program include:

  • the course material includes access codes

  • the course material is an e-textbook only (online textbook)

  • the course material is a custom textbook

Faculty, if you would like to learn more about the program, please contact the Maverick Shop Bookstore.

Information for Students (How to find your Course Materials/Textbooks?)

Students, you can search our page to find out if your textbook or other course materials are part of the Maverick Textbook Program.

Textbooks and course materials are found at the front Circulation desk in Memorial Library.

Textbooks and course materials will have different check-out periods, so be sure to review the email you will receive after borrowing the item!  However, many of the general textbooks located behind the front circulation desk have a seven day check out period.

Remember, the library does not carry all textbooks for all courses (that would be thousands!) as most of them change or are updated frequently and publishers prohibit the library from purchasing access codes.  If you do not see your textbooks or course materials on our list, please visit the Maverick Shop Bookstore to pick up your course materials.
