Common Read is an annual campus-wide community-building public reading initiative that centers on a chosen book. Learning opportunities, both in and out of the classroom, bring together the students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the greater community. Moderated discussions highlight diverse viewpoints and provide modeling for intellectual engagement. The MSU Common Read program is celebrating its seventh anniversary during the 2016/17 academic year.
Everyone is welcome to read the book over the summer prior to the start of the fall semester. The book may be used in conjunction with some courses. Each fall there are a variety of both day and evening events that are open to the public.
The goal of the Common Read is to create community and conversation with our students, families, faculty, and our community members. All are welcome to join us in reading the book, participating in discussions, and attending events. We hope that some of the area Book Clubs will choose the book; we hope that families will use it as a conversation piece as your son or daughter is preparing to leave home this summer; and we hope that our events and activities will lead to learning from each others' perspectives.
This year's Common Read is accompanied by the 1000 Peace Crane Project.
