What is included in the introduction?

The introduction for a literature review is a thumbnail sketch of a research question that should:

  • define and identify the general topic or subject to provide context
  • identify and discuss overall trends; or conflicts in theory, methodology, evidence, and conclusions; or gaps in research and scholarship; or a single problem or new perspective
  • provide a rationale for reviewing the literature; explain the criteria to be used in analyzing and comparing literature sources and the organization of the review (sequence); and when necessary, explain why certain literature is or is not included (scope)
