TRAPP: A Method for Analyzing a Fact Pattern for Legal Research

Before beginning your legal research, review the facts associated with the case. To analyze the fact pattern and identify pertinent issues, consider using the TRAPP acronym mnemonic:

  • T--THINGS involved
  • R--RELIEF sought
  • A--Causes of ACTION or DEFENSES
  • P--PERSONS or PARTIES
  • P--PLACES

NOTE: Be sure to explain why each of the above items is important. This will help you to begin developing an argument for the brief or memo being researched.

Gather and Organize Information

KWHL: Answer the following questions:

  • What do you already KNOW about the topic?
  • What do you WANT to know about the topic?
  • HOW will you find information about the topic?
  • What have you LEARNED about the topic?
